Bank Shop Assistant | Southend | £13.69 per hour, plus £1.99 per hour worked in lieu of annual leave | Variable hours
About the Role
We are looking for a Bank Shop Assistant to join our clients friendly retail team.
Working closely with the wider Shops team and volunteers, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the shops and provide an excellent experience for customers, donors and volunteers.
As this is a flexible bank role, you will work across different shift patterns, including weekends, providing cover for annual leave, sickness and other absences. Your contribution will help keep the shops running effectively and support the organisation's wider aims.
Key Responsibilities
Shop Operations
- Open and close the shop when required, including handling cash and banking in line with organisational policies and procedures.
- Work closely with volunteers to provide an excellent experience for customers and donors.
- Encourage and support members of the public to make good-quality stock donations.
- Deal with customer queries and complaints calmly, professionally and fairly.
- Ensure the shop floor is well stocked and attractively presented, following the organisation's pricing guidelines.
- Follow the organisation's Trading Manual and relevant retail procedures.
- Promote Gift Aid to customers and donors and follow the correct Gift Aid procedures.
- Maintain high standards of customer service and presentation throughout the shop.
Flexibility & Teamwork
- Work flexibly across a range of shifts, including Saturdays and Sundays, to provide holiday and sickness cover.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers and other teams across the organisation.
- Take a positive and flexible approach to reasonable requests from management.
- Attend team meetings, training, supervision and performance reviews when required.
- Occasionally travel to other locations for meetings or training.

- Handle organisational and personal data in accordance with GDPR, Data Protection policies and current legislation.
- Maintain confidentiality when dealing with personal, private or sensitive information relating to customers, donors, volunteers, colleagues or other individuals and organisations.
What You’ll Need
Desirable:
- Good standard of general education, including basic numeracy and literacy skills (e.g. GCSE or equivalent).
- Experience working in a retail, customer service or shop environment.
- Experience of cash handling and following agreed banking or till procedures.
- Experience of working alongside volunteers.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Essential:
- Strong customer service skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with customers, donors and volunteers.
- Confidence in handling cash and following financial procedures accurately.
- Ability to work flexibly across a rota, including weekends, to provide holiday and sickness cover.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to deal with customer queries and complaints calmly and professionally.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
